No Halloween party is complete without sweet treats and spooky decorations. But why stop there? For those who are of age, a spooky snack or beverage can be a great addition to help you and your guests get in the Halloween spirit. Speaking of spirits, I love to make Halloween inspired margaritas for my Halloween parties. There are so many easy ways to enhance the classic margarita with your own spooky spin! From blood red Hibiscus, to sweet and sugar free enhancements, let’s dive into my top 5 Margarita Ideas for Halloween.

1 Blood Orange Margaritas

Blood oranges, as the name suggests, make a great choice for making bloody Halloween inspired cocktails. While it can be more time consuming, Blood orange margaritas with fresh squeezed blood orange juice are hands down the best way to get natural red coloring without the use of dyes. Once you have fresh squeezed blood orange juice, you can experiment with how much you want to add to your margarita for the right color! For myself, I typically use the Cointreau Margarita, but add 2 ounces of Blood orange juice to get a nicer red color. I highly recommend squeezing your own citrus for this Halloween favorite.

Recipe:

  • 1 oz Cointreau
  • 2 oz Tequila Blanco
  • 1 oz Lime juice
  • 1/4 oz agave syrup (or to taste)
  • 2 oz Blood Orange Juice

Combine all liquids in a cocktail shaker. Shake well until chilled. Rim glass with Chamoy, and or Tajin for a red rim. Strain over ice. Garnish with a Blood Orange wheel.

2 Making a Margarita with Hibiscus

My hands down favorite way to make a natural and dye free Blood red Margarita is with Hibiscus! Making hibiscus syrup is incredibly easy, and gives you the ability to make a deep red colored drink. The process is similar to making the popular Mexican drink Jamaica, which uses dried hibiscus flowers.

Check out this Hibiscus Syrup recipe on YouTube to see just how easy it is. Once you’ve made your hibiscus syrup, follow the Hibiscus Margarita recipe for a sweet and tart Margarita without the artificial colors. For an extra pop of color, add a black lava salt rim, or chamoy and tajin rim for an even greater effect.

Recipe:

  • 2 oz Tequila Blanco
  • 1 oz Cointreau (or orange liqueur)
  • 1 oz Fresh lime juice
  • 1 oz Hibiscus syrup (homemade or store-bought)
  • Optional: 1/4 oz agave nectar (for added sweetness)

Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well until chilled, about 15 seconds. Rim your glass with chamoy and Tajin or black salt for a spooky presentation. Strain over fresh ice and garnish with a lime wheel or dried hibiscus flower.

3 Spooky Drink Rims

If you already have a great cocktail in mind for your Halloween party, why change it when you can enhance it? For many Tequila and citrus cocktails, a creative and Halloween inspired rim is all you need to get your guests in the Halloween spirit. With simple ingredients like sugar free chamoy and Tajin, you can add a blood rim to any cocktail that pairs well with spicy flavors. Plus, for those who are watching their sugar intake or calories, sugar free chamoy can be an excellent way to add a fun blood rim, but without the extra sugar! Check out their different flavors to find what pairs best with your recipe. Otherwise, black lava salt is another great option for rims. Try it with your favorite margarita recipe, and add a spooky touch with the night black accent of black lava salt.

4 Bloody Tequila Shots

Technically this one is not a Margarita, but uses some of the same ingredients, like Tequila and lime. For those Halloween parties where shots are on the table, there are some easy and great ways to make a simple shot into a fun, Halloween treat! To make Bloody Tequila Shots, start by pouring your shots, but only 3/4ths full. With the rest, add your ‘blood’, which is really just hibiscus syrup! This makes a fun red float on top of the tequila to keep it festive. If you don’t want to make hibiscus syrup, consider using another red alternative like blood orange juice, grenadine, or red wine! There are a lot of options to consider, but these shots go well chased with lime, or other citrus candy.

5 Creative Garnishes and Halloween Touches

At the end of the day, you can’t control what your guests will drink, but you can offer fun ways for them to enhance any beverage! Tip number 5 for making Halloween margaritas is to have fun garnishes and barware for your guests. While this mainly applies to Margaritas, your guests can enjoy most of these with any alcoholic or non alcoholic beverage.

  • Blood Orange Slices: These go great with any Margarita, or other citrus cocktails. Make your own with fresh blood oranges, or use dehydrated Blood Orange slices to give a spooky touch to your drinks.
  • Colored drink rims: While red is fun to make a bloody rim, it can be limiting. Consider adding other color options so your guests can choose what suits them! Some might have a favorite color, or a color they want to coordinate with their costume.
  • Creative Candy: Candy and Halloween go hand in hand, so feel free to get creative with your options! Having candy eyeballs, or candy bugs can be a great way for your guests to add a Halloween flair to their Margarita, or any beverage!
  • Festive drink stirrers: Try these skeleton arm drink stirrers to add a fun touch to any beverage. No matter what your guests are drinking, they'll be able to add some Halloween spirit to their drink without any extra ingredients.
